The Lord of the Ice

An amazing exhibition named The Lord of the Ice was opened in the congress hall of the Museum of the World Ocean. Its authors, Nikita Ovsyanikov and Irina Menyushina, are professional zoologists who devoted their lives to study of animals in the Arctic. They have spent 20 years side by side with polar bears and the pictures you see at the exhibition are unique photographs of the lord’s life.

A polar bear is a notable animal in every respect! It is the biggest and the most northern surface beast of prey on the planet. It is the only surface animal that inhabits exceptionally severe environment – arctic drift sea ice. A polar bear perfectly adapted to this environment and it became its home!

A polar bear is associated with the Arctic as its symbol since one’s childhood. This amazing animal is of inimitable charisma. Lots of people specially go for a hard and expensive trip to the kingdom of ice to see polar bears! Nevertheless, only few of them know about polar bears’ real life in the Arctic, how they behave in different situations, how they find food in ice, what happens to them when ice melts and what threatens them today. That is what the exhibition is about.

There is an old tradition to protect this highly vulnerable beast of prey in Russia; it is particularly essential when the species is under threat. Our national approach towards protection of polar bears is a positive practice and a model for a way to protect ecosystems of the Arctic and a big arctic animal whose survival is under threat in the present days! The exhibition is devoted to this topic as well.
